Who are they?
Universal Music Group is an American global music corporation that was once the record company attached to the film studio Universal Pictures, but is now a subsidiary of the French media conglomerate Vivendi. It is considered as one of the "Big Three" record labels, along with Sony Music and Warner Music Group.
What is a conglomerate?
A conglomerate is the combination of two or more corporations engaged in entirely different businesses that fall under one corporate group, it also usually involves a parent company and many subsidiaries. Often, a conglomerate is a multi-industry company.
What is oligopoly?
Definition - a state of limited competition, in which a market is shared by a small number of producers of sellers.
An oligopoly is a market form wherein a market or industry is dominated by a small number of large sellers. Oligopolies can result from various forms of collusion which reduce competition and lead to higher prices for consumers.
What superstar artists are signed to Universal?
Avicii, Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Prince, Lil Wayne, Miriah Carey, Adele, Elton John, Metallica, Imagine Dragons, Lana Del Ray, One Direction, Queen, Coldplay and many more.
Do Universal specialise in a certain genre(s) of music?
From my research, they seem to have a major pop influence in the artistes they sign, many of whom are main stream artistes.
